Consulting is DEAD! Blame A.I.
No other industry will face transformational change from A.I. like the Consulting business. Is this industry ready?

Artificial intelligence isn’t just on the horizon—it’s woven into the fabric of modern business. From the C-suite to the front lines, major enterprises are already leveraging AI for analytics, automation, and decision-making at a pace that would have seemed science-fictional just a few years. What’s happening now is a full-scale transformation of how companies generate value, and the consulting world is about to feel the impact in ways most consultants aren’t prepared for—or simply refuse to acknowledge.
Consulting has thrived on being the gatekeepers of specialized knowledge. Consultants wore their expertise on their chests and justified sky-high fees with promises of insights regular companies couldn’t generate on their own. But AI changes that dynamic entirely. Today’s enterprise clients can plug into platforms that instantly produce market analyses, process optimization strategies, even multi-year transformation roadmaps. According to a recent McKinsey global survey, more than three-quarters of large organizations already use AI in at least one business function, and the pace is only accelerating. The supposed secrets that kept consulting lucrative are rapidly becoming anyone’s game.

What most consultants don’t realize is that their clients are evolving faster than they are. Big-name consulting firms are sticking to business as usual—maybe layering on a token “AI advisory” service—while clients are busy deploying AI-powered solutions internally. It’s common now for a client’s in-house team to run analyses or scenario planning exercises that would have sat squarely in a consultant’s paid deliverable just a year or two ago. YIKES!

The root problem is simple but devastating: the average consultant is simply not equipped to help companies actually build, customize, and integrate real-world AI. Too many consultants are comfortable in the realm of broad recommendations and PowerPoint slides, but few have the hands-on technical chops to architect machine learning models, ensure data pipelines are robust, or guide clients through issues of ethics, or governance. They can talk about “AI strategy,” but when it comes to rolling up their sleeves and making AI actually work, there’s a skills gap.
If you’re a consultant, it’s time to ask yourself: Am I building real, technical value, or am I just talking about it? Clients are tired of “AI strategy” conversations that deliver little more than what an algorithm could produce on command. They want substance, speed, and measurable impact. And if you can’t offer that, you may soon find yourself replaced—not by another consultant, but by the very AI systems you claimed to understand!
