On January 8th, General Motors announced a $7.1 billion charge, allocating $6.0 billion of that amount to scale back its North American electric vehicle operations. This highlights a challenging market reality. The expiration of federal tax credits has raised the price for EVs just as gas prices are falling. GM is realigning its strategy to prioritize profitability over volume in a slowing EV market.

Consumers are fickle when it comes to electric vehicles. When gas prices are high, everyone wants to make the switch to electric. However, when gas prices are low, the masses don’t want it as much.
